Mix #4: Hi-Fi Is Like Lo-Fi Too

I am reposting these mixes every Sunday morning. They are from Mix Cure, my old blog.

This mix was originally posted February 24th, 2010.

Boil water, put tea in the teapot, put the water in the teapot. Sit on the chair, play this music. Wait three minutes, pour the tea. Wait ten minutes for the tea to cool down enough that it does not burn anything. Drink the tea. If there is no chair, sit on a carpet. I realize that some people do not like tea. For example, I do not like tea. I think it’s for hippies. If this is the case, do something else while listening to the music.

  1. Air – Clouds Up
  2. Helado Negro – Playas
  3. Nick Drake – Which Will
  4. St. Etienne – Like The Swallow
  5. Ruby Suns – There Are Birds
  6. Jandek – Your Other Man
  7. Los Saicos – Ana
  8. Television – Marquee Moon
  9. Squarepusher – Yes Sequitur
  10. Prince – So Blue

Mix #1

I am reposting these mixes every Sunday morning. They are from Mix Cure, my old blog.
Mix #1 was originally post Tuesday, February 9th, 2010.

Here is a decent five-track mixtape. It snowed like two feet and it’s going to snow more tonight, and I want to listen to these songs. It’s always good to listen to music when it’s super crappy out.

  1. Hank Williams – I’m So Lonely I Could Cry
  2. Merle Haggard – Sam Hill
  3. Dusty Springfield – The Look of Love
  4. The Supremes – I Hear A Symphony
  5. Serge Gainsbourg – 69 Année Érotique (with Jane Birkin)

Music: Dilla Ghost Doom: Sniper Elite & Murder Goons (Bonus)

This kind of crazy mixed-up sound and punctuated syllabism started with the production of El-P and and Aesop Rock and then Edan and psychedelic and ball-busting lo-fi production in the late-nineties and Nexused into something totally different in the middle of the double-aughts.

Its intense rough sampling and weird compression makes it fit in with the old sound and pushes into something lyrical and weird and way past early and mid double-aught sound and lyricism.

They want you to think they were totally wasted when they recorded this. Like their national holiday, "Australian Opposite Day."

Vashti Bunyan: The Lookaftering

Vashti Bunyan
The Lookaftering, 2005

Vashti Bunyan is some kind of anemic stoner hippie icon who is probably a teatotaling vegan. She took about 35 years between her first album to release this one. She worked with Animal Collective at one point, so I bet lots of people listened to this and hated it. The standout track is "Wayward." Wait for the glossy guitar part.
